Fraktur, blackletter, Old English

Blackletter is the family of broad-pen scripts used across Europe from the 12th century, and Gutenbergโ€™s Bible was set in one. "Old English" is the popular name for the style (and for a well-known typeface), and Fraktur is the German branch. Unicode encoded Fraktur letters for mathematics, where ๐”ค names Lie algebras, and thatโ€™s what makes gothic text copyable today.

Legibility check

Capital blackletter is famously hard to read: ๐”„, ๐”˜ and ๐”‘ are easy to confuse. For a name or a word itโ€™s striking. For a sentence, use bold fraktur in lowercase with a normal capital, or pick a different style.

Is Old English text the same as gothic font?

For copy-and-paste purposes, yes: both mean blackletter letters. Here, bold gothic (๐•บ๐–‘๐–‰) is the heavier Old English look and fraktur (๐”’๐”ฉ๐”ก) is the lighter one.

Can I use gothic text for a tattoo design?
